When Every Step Tells a Story: 5_6_7_8 Celebrates the Heartbeat of Friendship Through Dance

Melbourne's Bollywood Dance Company delivers an emotionally rich original musical where movement becomes the language of love, resilience and belonging.

The final curtain may have fallen on 5_6_7_8, but for the hundreds who filled the theatre, the memories continue to dance long after the applause faded.

More than a dance spectacular, 5_6_7_8 was a deeply moving theatrical experience that reminded audiences of the extraordinary power of storytelling through movement. Created by Melbourne's Bollywood Dance Company, the original musical seamlessly blended emotion, culture and artistry into a production that celebrated friendship, resilience and the enduring connections that shape our lives.

Conceived by choreographer and creative visionary Vihang Nikalje, the story was born not in a rehearsal studio, but around a dinner table. Following the success of the company's previous production, conversations among a close-knit dance family—many of whom have shared a journey spanning more than fourteen years—turned naturally to dreams realised, friendships tested, personal loss, growth and the bonds that withstand the passage of time.

From those heartfelt conversations emerged the foundation of 5_6_7_8.

At its core, the musical follows four friends whose lives are transformed through dance. Their journey explores ambition, heartbreak, reconciliation and self-discovery, while celebrating the courage to reconnect with the people and passions that once defined them. Although deeply rooted in the vibrancy of Indian culture, music and traditions, the story speaks to universal human experiences that resonate across cultures, generations and backgrounds.

What distinguishes 5_6_7_8 from conventional dance productions is its commitment to allowing choreography to carry the narrative. Rather than simply complementing the storyline, dance itself becomes the storyteller. Every performance, every sequence and every movement advances the emotional journey of the characters, allowing audiences to experience feelings that often transcend words.

The production masterfully traversed an array of dance styles—from energetic Bollywood and graceful semi-classical forms to contemporary and theatrical choreography—creating a visually captivating performance that balanced technical brilliance with emotional authenticity.

One of the show's defining moments was its powerful meta performance titled 5_6_7_8, where Western and Indian dance traditions merged in an electrifying display of artistic unity. The fusion served as a powerful metaphor for dance itself—an expression of love, strength, vulnerability and complete surrender to the art form.
For creators Vihang Nikalje, Sohini Banerjee and Darshan Pawar, the production represents something far greater than entertainment.

"Through our musicals, we strive to tell stories that are relatable not only to the Indian community but to every individual. Dance is one of the most powerful forms of storytelling, capable of expressing emotions that words often cannot. Through 5_6_7_8, we wanted to celebrate friendship, resilience, community and the transformative power of the performing arts," says Vihang Nikalje.

That vision was clearly reflected in the audience response. Throughout the performances, laughter gave way to tears, moments of silence to thunderous applause, culminating in standing ovations that spoke volumes about the emotional connection audiences had formed with the story and its characters.

Behind the scenes, 5_6_7_8 was equally a triumph of collaboration. Months of rehearsals, creative development and unwavering commitment from choreographers, performers, volunteers, production teams, families and supporters culminated in a polished theatrical experience that showcased the remarkable depth of talent within Australia's Indian performing arts community.

The production also highlighted the growing significance of community-led original theatre. By embracing authentic storytelling while celebrating cultural identity, Bollywood Dance Company demonstrated how the performing arts can build bridges, foster understanding and create meaningful connections that extend far beyond the stage.

Founded in Melbourne and Sydney, Bollywood Dance Company has earned a reputation for nurturing creativity, confidence and artistic excellence through dance. Beyond classes and workshops, the organisation continues to create original theatrical productions that provide performers of all ages with opportunities to tell stories that matter.

As the creative trio of Vihang Nikalje, Sohini Banerjee and Darshan Pawar celebrate the success of 5_6_7_8, they remain focused on a larger mission—to create theatre that inspires, entertains and unites communities through meaningful artistic expression.

Because for Bollywood Dance Company, this production marks not the conclusion of a performance, but another step in an evolving journey of storytelling through dance.

After all, every dance carries a story—and every story deserves to be danced.
