Rain Could Not Dampen the Spirit as Diwali Illuminates Federation Square in a Spectacular Celebration

06-11-2026  Gday India

Thousands gather at Melbourne’s iconic cultural precinct as Celebrate India marks 21 years of the Victorian Festival of Diwali, bringing communities together in a vibrant celebration of culture, connection and multicultural harmony.

The rain may have arrived early, but it could not dampen the festive spirit of Melbourne. As thousands converged on Federation Square on Saturday, 31 October 2026, the heart of the city transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colour, music, dance and cultural celebration, marking the 21st anniversary of Celebrate India’s Victorian Festival of Diwali.
From the rhythmic chants of bhajans to electrifying performances, traditional ceremonies to contemporary multicultural collaborations, the festival once again demonstrated why Diwali has become one of Melbourne’s most cherished celebrations of cultural diversity and community togetherness.
Despite the early showers, the enthusiasm of performers, families, volunteers and visitors remained undiminished. Federation Square buzzed with energy throughout the day, welcoming people from diverse cultural backgrounds and generations who came together to celebrate the universal message of Diwali — the triumph of light over darkness, hope over despair and good over evil.

A Festival Without Boundaries
The celebrations commenced with bhajan jamming, setting a spiritual and uplifting tone for the day. What followed was a rich program of entertainment and cultural experiences that reflected both the traditions of India and the multicultural character of contemporary Australia.
The main stage became a showcase of artistic diversity, featuring vibrant performances representing various Indian traditions alongside collaborative acts involving Vietnamese, Sri Lankan and Australian artists. The cultural exchange was a powerful reminder that traditions flourish when shared, and communities grow stronger when they celebrate one another.
Traditional ceremonies offered visitors an opportunity to experience the spiritual significance and customs of Diwali, while interactive workshops, arts and crafts activities encouraged people of all ages to participate, learn and connect.
Children and families were particularly well catered for, with activities that brought creativity, cultural discovery and festive enjoyment together in an atmosphere of inclusiveness. This is not just a festival, it is now a tradition that belongs to every Victorian,” said:  Jess Wilson, Liberal Leader of Victoria

Beyond the stage, the festival offered a feast of experiences. The bustling marketplace and bazaar featured traditional products, decorative items and festive treasures, inviting visitors to explore the richness of Indian craftsmanship and culture.
The food precinct proved equally popular, serving an enticing variety of flavours and culinary delights. The aromas, colours and lively conversations created an unmistakable festive atmosphere, with food becoming yet another bridge connecting cultures and communities.
Visitors dressed in colourful traditional attire added to the spectacle, transforming Federation Square into a celebration of heritage, identity and pride.

The festival attracted distinguished guests, including Victorian Minister Paul Edbrooke, Liberal Leader Jess Wilson, Lord Mayor of Melbourne Nick Reece, former Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu and the Head of Chancery representing the Consulate General of India, alongside business leaders and prominent community representatives.
The gathering underscored the significance of Diwali as an important cultural celebration within Victoria's multicultural calendar. Leaders and community representatives acknowledged the festival's contribution to cultural understanding, social cohesion and community engagement.
In a particularly encouraging development, Liberal Leader Jess Wilson pledged support for the festival over the next four years, highlighting the importance of sustaining community celebrations that bring people together across cultural boundaries.

Lighting Up Melbourne's Sky
As the day drew to a close, the energy showed no signs of fading. The celebrations concluded with another spirited jamming session, followed by a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the Melbourne skyline.
The dazzling finale brought thousands together in a shared moment of wonder, providing a fitting conclusion to a day defined by joy, generosity and community spirit.
For Celebrate India, the 21st anniversary was not simply a milestone but a reaffirmation of its enduring commitment to bringing communities together through culture, tradition and celebration.
The organisers extended their heartfelt appreciation to sponsors, partners, community organisations, performers, stallholders, volunteers, media partners and visitors whose collective efforts made the event possible.
Twenty-one years on, the Victorian Festival of Diwali continues to shine as a powerful reminder that the brightest celebrations are those in which everyone has a place — and that when a city embraces each other's cultures, the light of Diwali belongs to us all.
