Aamir Khan to Headline Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025 as Chief Guest

03-07-2025  Gday India

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) has announced that global superstar and acclaimed filmmaker Aamir Khan will serve as the official Chief Guest for its 16th edition, taking place from 14–24 August 2025.

Renowned for his transformative storytelling and social impact through cinema, Khan will be honoured with a special retrospective celebrating his four-decade-long career. A highlight of the tribute will be a screening of his newest release, Sitaare Zameen Par, followed by an in-depth conversation featuring Khan, director RS Prasanna, and Aparna Purohit, CEO of Aamir Khan Films.

“Aamir Khan is not just a cinematic legend but a fearless storyteller whose work reflects deep empathy and insight,” said Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange. “We’re honoured to welcome him as Chief Guest. His latest film is another powerful example of inclusive, heartfelt storytelling.”

Khan’s filmography includes groundbreaking titles such as Taare Zameen Par, Dangal, Lagaan, PK, and Secret Superstar. His latest, Sitaare Zameen Par, tells the story of a basketball coach fulfilling community service by mentoring a team of neurodivergent adults — a narrative praised for its compassion and authenticity.

“I’m thrilled to be part of IFFM 2025,” said Aamir Khan. “This festival beautifully celebrates Indian cinema’s diversity and impact. With Sitaare Zameen Par, we wanted to tell a story that embraces neurodivergence with sensitivity and joy. I look forward to connecting with audiences in Melbourne and sharing this journey.”

The announcement was also welcomed by Victorian leaders.

Premier Jacinta Allan MP said, “This year, Victoria is proud to host one of India’s most respected actors. Aamir Khan’s films echo the values of equality and inclusivity that we hold dear.”

Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks added, “IFFM is a cherished part of Victoria’s cultural landscape. With support from the Allan Labor Government, the festival continues to shine a spotlight on screen excellence and community storytelling.”

IFFM 2025 promises a vibrant line-up of screenings, panels, masterclasses, and cultural events — with Aamir Khan’s retrospective as a centrepiece of the celebration.
